F00552 A1, A2 Gully in south-west. Stones and chipples, overlying a layer of greyer chipples. Within this grey layer were some fairly isolated patches of red/burnt oolite, but no evidence of charcoal and no artefacts. Finds: One piece of bright pink burnt oolite PDF         5                         1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00552.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00552.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00552a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00552.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00552a.jpg
F00559 A2 Posthole / tree root. This in fact could well be tree root disturbance, though one or two of the upper stones look almost posthole like. Finds: A minute fragment of black pot. F00561 A2 Posthole of structure A1, which appeared on the surface as a slight depression. Although it was filled with large tumbled rock only some of the edges looked to be cut, and most of the edges looked like natural faulting in a very disturbed area. However, at the bottom of the hole, the basal layers showed a clear cut edge, here, of course, at a much smaller diameter than the originally excavated hole. Finds included 9 fragments of pot or daub, 2 pieces of burnt bone, and 2 pieces of charcoal [CH72/ 2163-5, 2257]. F00567 A2 Posthole. This hole was marked by very large rounded stones, which also distinguished many of the infill stones. Large flat stones protruded across the section and made drawing and complete section impossible. The large stones in the centre showed signs of burning and chipples of burnt oolite occured right to the bottom. Two very small pieces of charcoal came from the surface of the bedrock at the botttom. Other small pieces of charcoal occured under the central stones. The west edge of the posthole was packed solidly with nearly vertical stones. From behind one about 35cms down came a piece of daub, very red. One of the very rounded stones was very pink burnt oolite. West edge finally revealed quite a considerable overhang over the wall, behind slabby, unhewn rock. Finds: 2 very small pieces of charcoal from the surface of the bedrock. Other small pieces under the large central stones. Also a piece of daub very red. F00568 A2 Posthole. On the surface this posthole appeared as a large stone surrounded by smaller upturned stones forming a circular shape. When it was sectioned, the upper half was very difficult to section, as it displayed numerous large packing stones, with no definite cut edges. At 18cms down, one very large stone 50cms by 35cms was lying horizontally, again running into the section. Under the large horizontal stone were some stones which had been partially burned. Once the packing stones had been removed this post hole turned out to be quite large. Above the large horizontal stone, the upper stones were sloping in from the far edge toward the centre. The post hole edges below the horizontal stone were neatly hewn, except for the south edge which was a straight fault. Above the horizontal stone the post hole edges are not so nicely cut. F00569 A2 A probable double posthole, belonging to structure A1. The fill contained some largish burnt stones, and a definite inward slope from the early posthole edge (1) and the outward edge (2). F00576 A2 Possible shallow posthole at end of the long house near to the entrance. The surface contained circular area of disturbed stone amongst flat bedrock. On sectioning it flat stones were removed which were not lying horizontally. F00577 A2 Shallow posthole to east of F00568. This was a neatly cut but very shallow (32 cms) hole packed with some medium sized stones set in brown soil. Though much smaller than the other holes of A1, this and the comparable F00578 and F00516 seem to have been weak ends to the rectangular house A1. F00578 A2 Posthole to east of F00561 in structure A1. This small and comparatively shallow posthole matches F00577 and F00516 at opposite ends of the building.
