Posthole
of long house structure A2. The fill was mainly small stones. In the first
half of the posthole only one packing stone was found and the sides were
almost vertical. No finds were found in the posthole and there were no signs
of extensive burning: only three burnt red stones were removed. At the bottom
of the posthole the bedrock slopes about 10cms from north to south. At the
deeper end a large amount of blue-grey chipples and fine stones were removed
in the first half of the posthole and appeared in the section. No finds. |

This
posthole was filled with much larger stones than the comparable F570. Just
below the topmost stones of the posthole there were four very large stones
that showed extensive burning. The stones could possibly have come from the
rampart. These four stones were
photographed in situ before the rest of the post hole was excavated.
There were no finds and there seems to be little evidence of layers in this
first half section of the hole, except at the very bottom where there was
some blue grey soil and very fine chipples. The stratification in the second
half of the posthole differed: here there was a large amount of chipples
extending down to 15cms-25 cms below the datum line, and many smooth stones.
Under this layer were a number of larger stones which fill in the bottom of
the posthole, which appear to have been a collapsed packing. The large burnt
stones of the upper fill were therefore probably Period 3 infilling, using
stones from the rampart, to make a level surface for the roadway. |

Posthole
of structure A2, sealed by road surface. From under the road surface level
the posthole contained surface burnt chipples which were the bottom make up
of the 3b road. Further down the infill were large flat stones until about
30cms below the road surface when the infill became mostly soil and small
stones. This layer merged into a grey layer at the bottom which only differed
in colour and not make up. Associated finds: a piece of bone and a bit of
charcoal [CH72/ 7029-30] |

Posthole
of structure A2, which contained a considerable quantity of burnt red oolite
from the top of the hole downwards almost to the base. At approximately 10cms
below the datum line a few pieces of burnt daub were removed. A dozen
fragments of bone also found [CH72/
