Post hole, part of the timber lacing of the rampart. This is a round post hole packed to form a semi-circle. The top 30cm of the visible post hole was hollow and of semi-circular section. It was packed by small stones (2cm or less c. 0.8cm mean in greatest dimension); all these stones were bound together in calcarius deposit, which marked the shape of the timber with reasonable accuracy. The depth of the hole (34cm) was measured from just below the burnt rocks laid on the ancient topsoil to c. 15cm below bedrock. The semi-circle of the post hole not left simply by the vanished post is filled through the same 34cm by flat rocks, packed in at an angle, downwards towards the centre, contrasting with the `gravel' surrounding them. Between them is a light brown earth, lighter than the surrounding soil. At the bottom of this 34cm a thin layer of white calcification below which lay three to four cms of comminuted and calcified timber flakes. Below this 10cm of ash-grey soil mixed with charcoal and a little calcified wood, below that again 2-3cm with charcoal only (no calcified wood). Total depth of post hole 45cm. The other half was filled with rocks plus yellow soil throughout.
