F00006 AIII Burial of piglet in depression. The area immediately south of the North Bastion was seen at first as a post hole, but clearance showed that it extended southwards and became a slot (the original posthole was recorded as F6a). As work continued in this area, a large number of bones appeared in a dark sticky layer with some charcoal underneath the rubble fill (ie. tumble from layer 6 or 7 dipping down into trough). In the centre of F6 a skeleton of piglet resting almost wholly (back legs on upper cobbling) on patch of large flat stones: these were fairly clearly intrusive into the feature F00006. F00006A AIII Post hole accompanying F00006
Layer (1)  Fine yellow silt, mostly decayed 'meringue' with medium sized stones; compressed by weight of bastion wall from which it is sealed by a layer of dark silt/burned soil.
Layer (2)  Large and medium stones, nearly all burnt. Most stones   horizontal.
Layer (3)  Yellow silt as layer (1) with some of the reddish soil from the stone fill between the 'meringue' and the wall of the bastion. This level presumably hollowed during the cleaning and cutting down for the second phase bastion.
Layer (4)  Heavy brown soil and pea grit with some charcoal filling top of re-cut post hole.
Layer (5)  Light brown soil with some stones filling re-cut post hole.
Layer (6)  Packing of re-cut post hole. Burnt and unburnt medium and small stones, with very, very large stones at S side; some yellow silt between stones.
layer (7)  Yellow/brown silt at bottom of re-cut post hole.
Layer (8)  Reddish brown earth in inserted post hole. Large quantity of charcoal down line of post.(disturbed by tumbled stones).
Layer (9)  Packed 'meringue' and unburnt and burnt small stones, packed tightly around the post, forming a cast of its shape. Identical to post hole F14. Cut away to West by cutting of large re-cut post hole.
Layer (10) Yellow silt similar to layer (1) and small stones.
Layer (11) Flat layer of medium large unburnt stones.

F00011 AIII This is a posthole of the northern palisade trench of period 2, which appeared at the edge of the period 3 road; it appears that the upper part of the posthole was reused in the final entrance, perhaps as a support for a shelter behind the passage. F00016 AIII Post hole of two phases. The lower section belong to the southern palisade trench; the upper to a small posthole of period 3. This was cut through below bedrock but was not sealed by any of the layers above that. In particular, no road surface covered the post hole, which bordered on the south side of the mass of meringue, some of which seems to have found its way down the older hole as F00016(2). It appears that some of the surrounding ragstone may have worn off since the cutting of the post hole which would account for its shallowness when compared with the apparently corresponding post hole on the north side F00011. The post hole itself is well rounded in plan and well-cut with smooth sides.  PDF         1               period 3 tumble only Bedrock       1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00016.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00016.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00016a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00016.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00016a.jpg

F00070 AIII Linear feature based on a fault varying 40/50cm wide containing:
a) Hard packed small stone and fragments.
b) Intersecting fault divides (a) from grey soil, looser larger stones, much burnt charcoal and one bone.

Section (b) taken down to depth of 6ft: still burnt limestone. Bottom not reached at this depth, and this feature was almost certainly natural: it demonstrates, from the finds in the fill, that the geological movements on the top of the hill have been active since the Iron Age.
