Posthole set into a natural joint; this is no more than 50% probable, because of the natural movement here. If genuine, the posthole had been sealed below the rampart. Fill with rubble (some burnt) and dark brown sticky earth , covered by pea grit and light yellow layer.

Posthole at the very base of the rampart, and in 1969 identified as 1a; (?) associated with curving rock cut=drain (?). This may have been an unburnt marking out fence below the stone rampart, that is, an initial phase of period 2, rather than a preceeding period.
