The ditch. Some of the ditch layers are numbered separately: thus F04603=F04602(1) and F04606=F04602(2). Layering of the ditch: (1): chipples and earth, small rubble. (2): medium sized rubble in W half of the ditch. In the northern section, eastern side, this layer was very thin and only partially overlay layer 4. (3): large and loosely packed stones with soil, and some smaller burnt stones intermixed. An interfacial layer between 3 and 4, 4a, was found on the south side of the central baulk. Fine white to pale grey soil in a narrow area along the west side of the ditch, overlain by rubble and soil of (4).

Bank, with maximum stone size about 15 cms, but mostly much
smaller rubble <5cms. ?Counterscarp bank of Iron Age ditch.
Layering: (1): A bank of closely packed small and slightly worn stones (F04605(1)) runs along the crest of the bank, with larger slabs down either side. Some pottery, and bronze [no 510]. (2): Medium sized closely packed rubble of bank, with some pitched stones. (3): Large stones in dark brown earth, containing charcoal, lias, bone pot and bronze. Also called F04612(1)

Disturbed area around tree with black topsoil and chipples. This contained a large quantity of finds and appears to be the top of the old land surface F04616/F04618, or the bottom of bank F04605, damaged by roots. The large stones of F04605(3) and (3a) overlay this level, but the topsoil seems to have worked its way down between them, presumably through the roots.
