F00514 B2 Posthole. An area of small, broken limestone surrounded by flat, broken bedrock. Associated finds: 6 pieces of pottery including a rim, 12 fragments of daub, and a frag of bone[CH72/ 2086-7,  2150] PDF         1     30 cms   50 cms             posthole of B1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00514.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00514.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00514a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00514.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00514a.jpg
F00515 B2 Bedrock cluster with root disturbance, perhaps indicated by its irregularity. Area of stone pointing in all directions and of all sizes. Some prominent stones slope in an east - west direction. Turf and topsoil thicker in this area. Irregularly lying stone trowelled out to reveal flat bedrock at a depth of 30cms. Finds only connected with the turf and topsoil.  PDF         0         30 cms               1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00515.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00515.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00515a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00515.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00515a.jpg
F00516 B2 Possible posthole. An area of sloping and vertical small stones. No recognisable features from the surface. A small section on a north-east / south-west line was taken out to reveal a semi-circle of burnt stone under unburnt stone layer 15cms thick. Subsequent wet weather revealed burnt stone(pink) overlain by unburnt limestone. Sectioning showed the posthole was only 30cms. deep with an infill of large, flat stones and subsoil. In one corner the bedrock had actually been burnt pink. Finds: 1 body sherd, 9 pieces of daub, 1 small bone fragment [CH72/  6156-7]. It seems that this hole was used for the securing of a terminal post or strut at the end of the longhouse A1; a similar posthole was excavated at the other end of the structure. F00517 B2 Posthole of the B1 roundhouse. Top surface below the turfline contained chipples and soil surrounded by flat stones to the east and more broken stone to the west.  Associated finds: 4 body sherds including one piece of incised pottery at 28cms depth, 6 pieces of daub, and some charcoal [CH72/2085, 2151-2]. F00519 B2 From the surface identified as a possible posthole through its appearing as a chippled area surrounded by flat stone. This posthole was infilled with more stones than any of the others in the B1 roundhouse circle. Associated finds: very small amount of charcoal and one piece of daub [CH72/2083-4]. F00520 B2 Posthole 31 cms diameter and  54 cms deep. Surface contained shallow chipple depression. This posthole contained small fragments of charcoal and a pottery bead [CH72/ 2090] (depth 10 cm), as well as other daub, charcoal and pot [CH72/2088-2092, 2147] . When the posthole was fully excavated the bottom contained two packing stones still in place. F00521 B2 Posthole. Area of burnt pink chipples. small north/south section made through it, but revealed sloping stone. No definite feature at this stage. When cleaned up the bedrock showed that it had been cut on either side of the joint (see diagram), thus giving the very bottom of the posthole. The sides are too difficult to distinguish except perhaps the southern side because the whole area is very disturbed. Similarly the infill was difficult to distinguish between proper posthole infill and geologically disturbed areas, but it mainly consisted of flat stone lying irregulary with very little soil in between. Finds: 2 fragments of daub, 4 of bone, and 2 of charcoal [CH72/ 7084-7, 7226]. F00522 B2 Small posthole, lying between the ring of the large roundhouse and the presumed line of its outer walls. One curious flat stone standing vertically, surrounded by a bed of flat horizontal stones. On investigation this turned out to be a small posthole. The monolith took up most of the room but the remaining infill consisted of small (8 cm.) stone and earth, although nearer the bottom the texture became more chippley. One interesting aspect is that the hole was not cut vertically but sloped slightly toward the circular set of postholes. No finds. F00523 B2 Posthole. Not easy to see at the surface owing to disturbed stones lying  irregularly. At a depth of 27 cm it could be clearly seen to be cut vertically into the bedrock and is similar in diameter (28 cms) and depth to the other posthole in the circle. In-fill consisted of small stones and earth. Finds: A piece of patterned sherd at a depth of 17 cm together with 4 more sherds of pottery, a very small lump of iron, and 25 pieces of daub [CH72/2081-2,  2154,  2156, 2157-8] PDF         1     25 cms diam   32 cms       Bedrock       1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00523.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00523.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00523a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00523.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00523a.jpg
F00524 B2 Posthole containing two smaller postholes. The larger posthole is taken to be later because the smaller has levelled packing of small stones and some leaching, while the larger has packing stones and the infill material tips into it. The larger, furthermore, was visible from the top of the surface. Smaller posthole marked (2) on plan, consisted of small stones and soil with a grey silting layer at the bottom which rose slightly at the sides of the posthole. The larger posthole (1) had cut into this silted layer, and nearer the surface contained a few small stones, which sloped into posthole (1) suggesting that this was cut at a later time. Posthole (2) contained a small indentation at the base of the bedrock. Posthole (2) contained a small amount of burnt stone (pink and grey) in the upper parts of the posthole, but no finds. Posthole (1) contained a small quantity of daub plus pot, but no burnt stone. A third posthole is possible at the southern side of the posthole: this would be much smaller than other two. However, the side marked "X" on the plan is not very pronounced and  may be connected with the cutting of posthole (1). Finds: Posthole (1) contained a small quantity of daub, 8 sherds of pot, a small fragment of bone, and some charcoal [CH72/  2148-9, 2187-9]. F00525 B2 Posthole. Not obvious from the surface but was in line with the circle of postholes. At a depth of 20 cms it started to cut into the bedrock. Finds: 4 bodysherds, 5 lumps of daub [CH72/  2155]. F00526 B2 Posthole. From the surface this was a disturbed area of stones running into the B2, B3 baulk. The northern end was removed first and an edge running north-east, south-west began to emerge; this however had no curve to it and from the size of the large flat stones from here it was more likely to be a natural joint. On the southern side a circular hole had been cut but the side adjacent to the joint was unrecognisable as such;  large flat sloping stones and soil came from this area as well, and thus the infill was the same throughout. No finds whatsoever. This posthole is the most anomalous of those excavated in 1972 and from its size did not tie in with F00527 or F00524(1) and (2). When the rest of the posthole was taken out it proved to be a very irregularly shaped hole except for a southern radius. The northern end consisted of soil and does not have a fissure. From the section it is apparent that the larger more northern posthole was cut first (a poor cut) and that a small posthole had then been cut into south side of northern posthole, to form one side of the infill (a better cut posthole). Infill of larger posthole was large sloping stone with earth, while smaller posthole had small stone with soil. No burnt material. No finds. Some infill material which was not possible to show in the section drawing were medium stones falling in an angle on north side. F00527 B2 Posthole. Some burnt stones, pink and grey, came out of the upper half of the posthole, but none from the bottom. The infill was consistent throughout, of small to large flat stones lying iregularly. The only small find in this posthole was a small piece of flint. F00528 B2 Posthole of roundhouse B1. South edge had no curve and it appeared to be a natural fault, as there is a joint line running east/west at the bottom of the posthole. At about 40 cms below the surface, a layer containing pieces of charcoal and grey earth soil, retained  for a sample (identified as oak). The bottom of this charcoal spread was at about 60 cms, 5 cms short of the bottom of the posthole. Below this the grey layer continued, but no flat stones were resting on the base. Pieces of daub mixed with sub-soil plus grey layer and the very occasional pink oolitic stone (burnt).  Finds:  A rim sherd, fragment of bone, charcoal/grey earth, 2 pieces of daub mixed with subsoil and occasionally pieces of pink oolitic stone (burnt) [CH72/  2648-9, 2820-2] PDF         1                       posthole of B1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00528.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00528.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00528a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00528.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00528a.jpg
F00541 B2 Posthole within area of round house B1, but not actually part of the circle. Its total depth was only 30cm. from ground level, and about half that below the bedrock. The infill contained several sherds of pottery, of which at least three pieces fit together[CH72/ 7134-5]. One small packing stone at the bottom. About a 2cm. layer of chipples at the bottom of the posthole. F00542 B2 Posthole, similar to F541 in size. The posthole contained small stones lying irregularly on surface. Halfway down some medium sized flat stones were removed and toward the bottom the posthole became progressively earthier and finally ending with a chipple layer. No finds.
