F00535 B4 Site of hawthorn bush, whose roots had grown outwards into bedrock. Very disturbed bedrock indicating that vegetation had grown into a dug out pit. Trowelled down but the stones became larger and flatter as the level was lowered, probably therefore representing natural strata in a bedrock cluster caused by roots. F00536 B4 Posthole underneath road surface. Surface showed some flat stones burnt red with a circular soil and chipple area around it. Infill also contained a few pieces of burnt limestone, but the main matrix was unburnt stone packed tightly with the subsoil. Towards the bottom the subsoil turned a mouldy grey colour. Still with packed stones 3 cms from the bottom, the grey soil plus stones formed a flat level possibly a packing to level the bottom of the posthole. Finds: 21 pieces of daub and a rim sherd of plain black pot, burnt bone, cinder, charcoal and 7 fragments of sandstone, all  found in the upper half of the posthole [CH72/ 6158-60,  7033-4,  7074-6]. F00537 B4 Posthole underneath road surface, indicated at first by a circular chipple area surrounded by bedrock. A few small pink stones were among the surface chipples. This is a very well cut posthole with vertical sides extending 63 cms into the bedrock. The infill consisted of soil and small stones (but not as small as chipples), tightly packed. At the bottom, there was a slanting layer of greyer earth which contained fewer stones than the layer above. This was probably a silting layer. No finds from this posthole.
