F00450 C1 Root disturbance. When trowelled over produced an interesting number of finds, and there were also finds to north of F00455. Slab of limestone at top. Half sectioned north-south. Appears to be disturbance caused by tree roots, since the stones were random. Finds included 67 sherds of pottery, 42 pieces of daub, 36 fragments of bone and 12 teeth, 23 flints, 27 pebbles and some charcoal  [CH72/ 1387-90,  1394, 1399,  1403,  1407, 1427-56,  1549-52,  1612-3, 1729-58] PDF     1   0     165 cms across   33 cms               1 1 1   1 http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00450.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00450.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00450a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00450.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00450a.jpg

F00454 C1 Posthole. Identified as a ring of smaller stones, some vertical, with little sign of burning visible. Some red stones, and small sherds, fragments of bone and charcoal; all these came from near the top. Fill;mainly unburnt limestone, some stones as large as 20x10 cms, mixed with chipples and brown earth. There was no real graduation going downwards; perhaps stones tended to be small at the very bottom (generally less red chipples than in F00455). Finds;some red stones, small sherds, fragments of bone and charcoal, all from near top.                                                 PDF         1                         1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00454.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00454.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00454a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00454.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00454a.jpg
F00455 C1 Possible posthole, showing as a ring of burnt stones close to F00450, and perhaps part of it. Fill; mainly small stones, red and yellow chipples, brown soil tending to grey at bottom. Natural leaching. All finds in top 20 cms (below west edge). F00456 C1 Line of vertical burnt stones possibly due to fence removal. Appeared as line of burnt vertical stones thought at first to be fault and so disregarded,  but this feature now appears to only extend about 1 metre.  Vertical stones appear to have been placed in shallow trough cut in bedrock. Stones appear in rock cut tilted away from vertical, almost as though something has been removed, and the packing has subsequently tilted. Considerable amount of red and yellow chipples over bedrock. F00457 C1 Possible posthole, or palisade trench, showing up in a disturbance in the centre of the cutting. Though this is very likely not to be a feature, man made disturbance was indicated by the discovery of pottery and bone fragments. Possible trench for pallisade. Half sectioned, and the rest removed, at which point the bottom and side caved in revealing natural fissure. On the whole only a few finds of pottery and some bone fragments. F00458 C1 Posthole, identified due to red and grey stones in ring. Half sectioned together with F00459, and drawn; little of this feature was visible. It appears to have been a posthole at corner. The fill consisted in stones, set in yellow chipples throughout. The finds came from upper part containing red stones. F00459 C1 Possible posthole, linked to F00458; this appeared as a set of large angled stones. Half sectioning revealed shallow trough cut into bedrock: highly unlikely to be natural. Fill;large stones, set in brown soil. The verticality of stones suggests that this was possibly packing. The posthole is similar to F456, and may have links with F00458. F00460 C1 Possible posthole, identified by circular feature of small stones, set in brown to yellowish soil. Dug completely as too small to half section, and revealed chipple layer at bottom, though there were at least some chipples throughout. All finds from small stones and soil layer in the upper part of the hole. F00461 C1 Root hollow? Circle? of possible disturbance. Half sectioned; dead end only 75cm deep. Completely excavated with no sign of finds. Therefore suspected of being a natural hollow.  PDF         0         75 cms               1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00461.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00461.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00461a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00461.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00461a.jpg
F00462 C1 Posthole. The initial identification was as a circular feature of burnt stones. Large body sherd immediately found. The posthole proved to be smaller than was originally thought. Fill was mostly brown soil, with some red stones, up to 10 cms square; one of these, heavily burnt (grey), was set vertically in the approximate centre of the posthole. More heavily burnt stones were found throughout the  fill. A spread of yellow chipples was found throughout, with more towards bottom.  PDF         1     18 cms diam   50 cms               1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00462.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00462.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00462a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00462.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00462a.jpg
F00463 C1 Posthole. Showed initially as a vertical stone in otherwise flat bedrock. Small stones around indicated a possible posthole. On sectioning, the feature appeared to be the socket for post. The fill was of brown earth with considerable quantities of charcoal fragments. Small stones, some red rock fragments, and yellow chipples throughout fill increasing towards the bottom. F00953 C1 Posthole with square "socket " in centre approximately 8cm x 8cm. Fill is entirely packing stones, apart from centre which is small stones at random with brown soil. F00963 C1 Posthole. A small posthole visible as a circle in the bedrock. There were no definite packing stones, and no finds.
