F00465 C2 Probable posthole, about 47 cms wide and 54 cms deep. The infill showed no variation in brown loamy soil or stone colour though two or three blue coloured oolite stones were recovered from the bottom layers. No pot was found below 35 cms from top; a tooth within 5 cms of surface. Fault in north side of posthole. F00466 C2 Posthole. Infill showed reddish stones with rounded edges at surface, tipping together towards centre, as collapsed packing. The matrix was of small stones and brown soil. No chipples over bedrock. A base sherd was found near surface but on the whole there were few finds.  PDF         1     54 cms 70 cms 47 cms             part of C1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00466.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00466.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00466a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00466.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00466a.jpg
F00467 C2 Posthole. Very obvious at surface including burnt stones. Little sign of packing, and few vertical stones; there was also little evidence of layering except for chipples over bedrock. There was an occasional burnt stone but small in size. Large quantity of red/black pot was found half way down. F00471 C2 Very large posthole and a short rock-cut trench, with large number of finds, including pottery; the decorated sherds are marked on section drawing. The infill included a quantity of heavily burnt material and charcoal within 10 cms of the top.  The trench measured 78 by 64 cms, 16 cms deep. The posthole was about 80 cms by 100 cms, and 75 cms deep. A number of vertical stones - probably collapsed packing - was found in the posthole, and there were burnt stones throughout. Pottery sherds occurred in considerable quantity: see below.  The feature appears to be part of a porch to the west of the large hut circle B1, containing a large post with a strut or buttress to hold it up.  The finds included: 83 sherds of pottery (only 2 of which were rims), 58 fragments of daub , 5 fragments of bone, one burnt, and some 68 pieces of charcoal and cinder [CH72 2100, CH72 2101, CH72 2102, CH72 2104, CH72 2133, CH72 2161,CH72 2173,CH72 2211,CH72 2212,CH72 2212, CH72 2098,CH72 2101,CH72/ 2103,CH72 /2001,CH72/2100,CH72/ 2102,CH72 /2102,CH72 /2161,CH72/ 2173,CH72/2099,CH72/ 2159,CH72/ 2172,CH72/ 2207,CH72/2002,CH72/ 2098,CH72/ 2101,CH72/ 2103,CH72/ 2160,CH72/ 2171,CH72 /2205,CH72 /2206,CH72/2207,CH72/ 2208,CH72/ 2209].  PDF         1     64 cms (trench), 80 cms (posthole) 78 cms (trench), 100 cms (posthole) 16 cms (trench), 75 cms (posthole)             posthole of B1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00471.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00471.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00471a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00471.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00471a.jpg
F00472 C2 Double posthole, on line of hut circle B1, with a long axis of 75 cms, and about 60 cms deep. The section shows that the western half had the same fill as the others in the ring. The eastern half of the posthole was earlier, and had been filled with large deliberately placed stones. In addition, a number of small burnt stones were found. This earlier posthole formed part of a square structure C1. The bottom of the hole was comparatively clean, without chipples. The small posthole was cut sometime later, off centre from the original. It is probable that the small posthole was deliberately cut into the side of the earlier one, and that the large posthole was at this point packed with larger stones: for a section drawing, see under Structure C1, below. Associated finds: 14 sherds of pottery, 5 fragments of daub, a piece of bone and 4 fragments of pebble  [CH72/ 2106-7, 2137-46]. F00473 C2 Posthole from circle  of hut B1. The fill contained brown soil with chipples at bottom. No burnt stones were present and there was little evidence of layering or inwash, apart from a thin layer of silt at the bottom of the hole. Packing stones were clear on the southern side, and probably on the northern side too. A single find was a lump of burnt clay very near the surface [CH72/2108].                                          PDF         1     38 cms diam   34 cms             posthole of B1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00473.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00473.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00473a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00473.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00473a.jpg
F00474 C2 Posthole (of hut circle B1) on line of the large circle, generally similar to other postholes in having fill entirely of brown soil and small stones, with chipples over bedrock. A few small finds. No burnt stone. F00475 C2 Posthole (of hut circle B1), with usual fill of brown soil and small stones and with chipples over bedrock. A few small finds: one rim and 2 bodysherds of pottery, and a piece of daub [CH72/  2115, 2177]. No burnt stones.  PDF         1     47 cms max   54 cms             posthole of B1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00475.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00475.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00475a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00475.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00475a.jpg
F00476 C2 Posthole of the large roundhouse B1. The edges were not as neat as the larger ones nearby e.g. F00466 and F00465. Layer (1): was a loose stone fill. Layer (2): was a grey mix with a relatively large amount of charcoal. This layer had a adhesive effect on the larger stones near the base, giving the impression of a false bottom in half section. This was a deep posthole with a medium diameter. Finds: Layer (2) contained a relatively large amount of charcoal in a grey mix, and several decorated sherds with white inlay were found in this layer [ch72/ 2111, 2112, 2134-6, 2167, 2170] PDF         1     38 cms   54 cms 2           posthole of B1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00476.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00476.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00476a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00476.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00476a.jpg
F00477 C2 Posthole. Large stones right across feature as shown on section gave the appearance of having been deliberately filled. The infill was mostly brown with stones at the top. There were no finds in the first 40 cms. The packing may have collapsed in as the packing became looser towards the centre and bottom of the hole, with a grey layer at the bottom, mainly leaching. There were no signs of charcoal. This feature was shallower than anticipated, with smaller stones in the corner, as shown on the section. F00478 C2 Posthole. South-east corner of earlier structure C1. the top of the posthole was filled mainly with small stones and brown soil particularly in centre. Larger stones seemed to be rammed in (see section), but could just be collapsed packing. Finds: 1 decorated sherd from 25 mm above bedrock. Also fragments of burnt clay [CH72 2166, 2176]. Chipple over bedrock as usual, and the hole showed an approximately equal size to F00477, F00465, F00466, and the earlier part of F00472.        PDF         1     45 cms   45 cms             posthole of C1 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00478.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00478.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00478a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00478.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00478a.jpg
F00479 C2 Posthole, notable for accumulation of daub and pottery. Apparently only one layer - brown soil and small stones - and no sign of any packing stones or burnt stones. F00490 C2 Posthole with stones at top, and few finds. Usual two layers caused by collapsing packing. Larger stones than normal in these postholes. Few finds: 5 sherds, 23 fragments of bone, and a quantity of charcoal, about 60 pieces [CH72/ 2785-6, 2835-7]. F00497 C2 Disturbed area in front of hearth (497(a) Posthole). Disturbed area to west of hearth was originally thought to contain postholes running in front of the hearth. Found posthole F497(a) which was almost totally removed with only 5cm. of cut ring left. Fill of mainly chipples at the base, possibly with a little burnt material. Finds : 12 sherds of pottery, 8 pieces of daub, 2 fragments of bone, and 10 cinders [CH72/ 6149-51, 7203].
