F00400 D1 Posthole. This had no stone paving covering it, and it was seen as a soil and  chipple depression on the surface. It contained 3 large packing stones which were at the upper part of the postpipe and a substantial amount of primary fill or silting below the postpipe. The bedrock to the south of the posthole was more worn than that to the north. Finds: 1 bodysherd, 2 fragments of bone, and 3 flint flakes [CH72/ 1540-2]. F00401 D1 Post Hole. Observed initially as a circle of chipples and broken stone in bedrock, in similar way to F00400 - but it turned out to be slightly deeper and contained rather less primary silting. Four large packing stones were found about one third of the way down. Finds: 1 bodysherd and 10 fragments of bone in primary silt - layer (2) [CH72/ 1787-8] PDF         1     50 cms diam   50 cms             posthole of A3 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00401.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00401.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00401a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00401.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00401a.jpg
F00402 D1 Post Hole. Deeper than F00401, which is deeper than F00400, even though the ground surface slopes down from F00400  to F00402. The bottom of the post was thus deeper even than the slope: for this see the block diagram of depths. Diameter:- top 51cm. bottom 42cms, and 54 cms deep. The upper part of the infill was relatively stone free: the lower portion contained a number of horizontal slabs which appear in section, and may have been put as padstones for the post. Finds; From layer (2) primary fill - 1 sherd and 22 pieces of bone;  from the upper level, a fragment of iron, a flint flake a 2 fragments of charcoal [ CH72/ 1789-94, 7181-2] PDF         1     Top, 51 cms diam, bottom 42 cms Liam   54 cms             posthole of A3 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00402.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00402.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00402a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00402.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00402a.jpg
F00405 D1, D2 Patch of heavily burnt material in situ. A small, intrusive heap of possible slag was discovered immediately below the turf. On clearing this emerged to be a ? spillage of very hot lime-laden slag resting directly on the bedrock. One small piece of high iron content (?) lay loose on the top. There was no peripheral burning, bar a reddening of the rock for one centimetre around. The bedrock around is very worn and is difficult to avoid the conclusion that this substance was deposited whilst the bedrock was an exposed surface and before layer (1) formed in this area. The intense but VERY local burning of the rock laminae below - only 8 cms in diameter but slaked line in centre - seems to indicate an intensly hot substance cooling rapidly in situ. Note that this number was erroneously given for a time during the 1972 season to a posthole in cutting D2, which is properly referred to as 444, part of structure A3. Thus finds from 444, 405 should be disregarded as suspect. F00414 D1 Natural feature. Initially identified as a stoney laid surface on platform, such as might be found for a hut floor. This material consisted of very worn and weathered shelly oolite with no apparent joint pattern. Yellowish colour, when intially exposed. The platform appeared to be laid over gull edge in west of cutting D1 , but after three weeks exposure this area could be seen to be bedrock and the colour difference faded with time. The horizontal laminae extending over the powdery CYLS was here seen for the first time, but has proved a common phenomenon especially towards the northern side of the hill. There were no finds.
