F00447 D3 Possible pit. In stripping an area of chipple in the north of D3 a small pit was discovered against the north section. This was very irregularily cut, and its function was not immediately clear. Fill;-medium-brown soil and many medium sized stones, with  large number of flints (13), 2 bodysherds, and a quanitiy  of animal bone, 121 small pieces,  in very poor condition. Finds include, in addition, (1) Chalky flint scraper [no 287], roughly triangular, from bottom of top soil some 20cm to east of feature . (2)Blade from flake of ?obsidian? / flint [no 288], well stratified to eastern side of feature [CH72/ 7199, 7205, 7230-2,  7239].

F00800 D3 Burnt area of flat stones, lying beneath tree, and hence rather churned up with roots. This proved to be an area of burnt tumbled stones south of and next to the hearth,  F00801. Layers: (1): Burnt tumbled stones. (2): Earth below F00800(1). (3): Chipples and disturbed stones, from which a leaf arrowhead  [CH72/ 2795] and a flint axe [CH72/ 2431]. F00801 D3 Hearth. An area of upturned pink burnt stones formed a square, just north of F800. Max width: 60 cms; max.depth below top surface 30 cms. After removing edging stones and central hearth slab, it is apparent that a hole was cut in the upper rock layers, and the hearth slab laid - possibly being levelled with earth under it, and the edging rock slabs inserted around the edges. These vertical edges stood up above ground level, and ran down the sides of the hearth slab. Under layer (3) there was no burning on the bedrock at all, and the hearth slab was burnt and reddened only to less than half its thickness. Finds included: 3 body sherds, no fewer than 130 pieces of burnt clay (? oven material), 16 fragments of bone, and 22 pieces of charcoal [CH72/  2981-2,  7214-7, 7257-60, 7272].  PDF     1   4                 Upper rock layers     part of B4 1 1 1   1 http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00801.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00801.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00801a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00801.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00801a.jpg
F00802 D3 Small posthole in south edge. Perhaps one  of a circle around hearth. Infilled with a mixture of soil and small stones. A layer of chipples and yellow soil at the base. F00811 D3 Posthole in N.E.of cutting D3. This was a well cut hole, with steep sides, and a flat base, with a mass of packing at the western side. The postpipe lay to the east, and was filled with darker earth. At the bottom a considerable spread of light brown soil and fewer stones. The posthole formed a line with 409 and 812, at the eastern end of structure A4. The finds included: a single bodysherd, 20 lumps of daub, 5 pieces of bone, and 5 bits of charcoal [CH72/  7043-6,  7070-3]. F00812 D3 This posthole was dug into a gull of soft limestone, making its edges hard to find, but there were some very large packing stones which lined the posthole edges. The upper half of the infill was of dark soil with large slabs; below the half-way point the soil became light brown, and the stones rather smaller. The very bottom of this hole may have been overdug into the soft limestone. F00813 D3 Small posthole. This posthole was infilled with small stones, chipples and earth, with remains of packing of chipples and earth on its sw side. Further packing stones were visible behind the section, protruding into cutting layer 1, the topsoil. F00814 D3 Posthole smaller than expected - in a gull on fault. Infill as other small postholes in area at top, but bottom half all chipply with stones probably due to being dug in a gull. F00815 D3 Posthole incorporating smaller posthole. This feature was sectioned suspecting it to be a large posthole for it showed on the surface as a depression with vertical burnt stones to one edge. A small posthole was discovered on cleaning, and the upper part of the hole was filled with large and small stones in dark earth. The lower part (2) of this small posthole was completely filled with light coloured chipples with a very definite sealing of dark earth. Another small posthole beside this, called layer (3).  The finds included 5 sherds of pottery, 4 bones and 6 pieces of charcoal [CH72/  7130-1,  7150]. F00816 D3 Area of tree root upheaval, immediately east of hearth F00801. This looks as though it could be a badly damaged hearth - disturbed by a tree root. On cleaning this area up, burning appeared - grey and pink stones and some probable edging stones as in F801. Although very disturbed and broken up, this could well be another hearth. A very broken burnt stone could have originally been a hearth slab as in F00801. From above this came pot, charcoal etc.
Unfortunately the upturned, vertical, possible edging stones produced no sign of burning, but the outer edging of F00801 were in their turn not burnt. We may therefore have lost the vertical inner edging stones in this feature. If this is a hearth, it is much inferior to F00801, and it appears to be a rebuilding after the abandonments of the posthole series around F00801: see below F00819.
F00800, F00801 and F00816 all seem to have been hearths or areas for fires within B4, which is excessive  if this was simply a domestic building.  After removing the tumble from above this, the actual burnt area of surface is a similar size to F801, although it is difficult to say whether it is square or rounded. Width; 90cm; depth:30cm.
iFnds included: 28 bodysherds, 18 fragments of bone, and 23 pieces of charcoal [CH72/ 7250-3, 7273-5, 7312-3]

F00818 D3 Posthole immediately south of F00801. Infill as in posthole F00817. These two postholes appear to be contemporary with each other, and neither were obvious until the area around the hearth was cleaned.Other than the odd pink chipple and very small pink stones, there are no burnt stones, and certainly no grey burnt stones, from within the infilling of postholes F00817 and F00818. Finds: 3 fragments of bone and 3 pieces of charcoal [CH72/ 7276-7]  PDF         1     35 cms   38 cms             part of B4 1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00818.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00818.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00818a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00818.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00818a.jpg
F00819 D3 Posthole, to the east of hearth F00801. Small post within and below the upper burning of F00816. While it is possible that this posthole and F00816 are the same, and that what appeared to be a hearth in F00816 was in fact badly disturbed posthole edge packing which had been burnt, it is more likely that 819 was replaced by the hearth slab, in a rebuilding which abandoned the 4-post setting around F00801. All but the northern edge in the upper part had gone in tree root disturbance, but as shown in the drawing, the northern edge was complete up to the surface, and all the lower edges still existed cut into the bedrock. This then makes three postholes around the F00801 hearth, and although this is smaller in diameter than the other two, the surface level at the top of the posthole is the same as the other two. Disturbance running east from F00819 almost entire length of the cutting. Finds included: 4 bodysherds, 3 small fragments of bone and 2 pieces of charcoal [CH72/ 7309-11].
