F00251 F1 Posthole in SE corner of cutting. The western side of the hole was cut into chipples and gull material, but its edge was clear from the packing stonesFill was of loose light brown soil with a packing of chipples and some vertical rag stones. Contained one sherd of pottery and some burnt stone.  PDF         1     44 cms diam   30 cms               1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00251.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00251.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00251a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00251.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00251a.jpg
F00252 F1 Post hole. 1 small piece of bone in the bottom of fill. Upper part of hole filled with chipples and topsoil, and the bottom with medium-sized stones (perhaps formerly packing) and brown earth. F00253 F1 Palisade slot 1 gully. The gully between the ragstone in the South East corner and the exposed crumbly yellow limestone in the centre was troweled out to the N. Throughout, the edge of the ragstone was vertical and 15cm high. The gully curves. Several sherds, which were of a more oxidised fabric than the pottery from the chipple layer were found in the fill of the gully. This fill consists of a mixture of chipples and topsoil. The gully has none of the appearance of a drainage gully. Possibly a palisade slot rather than a trench. Either it was cut into the ragstone at the edge of an already exposed and weathered area, or it represents a palisade against which a leveling or cobbling of loose ragstone has been built up. F00254 F1 Posthole. One of two postholes lying in a line NW of F00252 (the one adjacent to F00252 being called F00254, the further one  F00255). All these are of the same depth, but only F00254 cuts through the crumbly yellow limestone. The infill consisted of loose stone, light brown soil and chipples. F00263 F1 Posthole. The apparent animal disturbance between F00252 and F00254, although its fill is disturbed by ? moles ? , is a pair of postholes intersecting and covered by the chipple packing found around the other postholes. Tentative phasing: Postholes cut in crumbly yellow limestone. Posts removed, and replaced when the chipple levelling was put down, and used as packing around posts. In this phase, some postholes were filled, or capped over, with chipples and were therefore disused in this phase. These two postholes are F00263 and F00264.  PDF         1                 crumbly yellow limestone       1 1 1     http://www.crickley.org/features/all/F00263.pdf http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00263.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/hand/F00263a.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00263.jpg http://www.crickley.org/featurepics/inked/F00263a.jpg

F01190 F1 A line of trapped soil and chipples which appeared as a linear soil-trap in F1 and F99, approximately 70cm. wide, running north to south and containing a large proportion of burnt small stones and chipples. Its east and west edges seemed to be delineated by vertical stones, indicating a trough/gulley/palisade trench. The feature seemed to be a continuation of F01181. The section above established that the feature was a real one and that it had a depth of at least 20cm.-this depth being the maximum thickness of the dark soil/burnt stone layer (F01190(1)). Although excavation continued to 35 cm below the top of the feature it was not possible to establish whether the lower fill (F01190(2)) was indeed a fill, or simply part of the stony platform (F01183) through which the top layer of F01190 was clearly cut.  F01183, `stony platform', was visible on both the east and west sides of  F01190, but on the east side it was capped by a skin of flat slabs, F01183(2) in a clear contrast with the jagged angular stone rubble capping on the west side (F01183(2)). The laid nature of the flat slabs was proven by the clear stratification of burnt stones. 10 cm below the slabs the burnt stones were contained in the rubble build up - thus the rubble build up (F01183(3)) was shown to be dumped and not merely ragstone. It is thus likely that this was the floor layer of a structure. The flat slabs (F01183(2)) were contiguous with the vertical stones which marked the east edge of F01190.
