F00201 H2, BI Segmented ditch in cuttings BI and H2. Covered by fine dark brown soil dipping slightly over ditch and extending beyond it especially to East. Finds from the soil allocated to level (1) generally and not specifically to this feature included a very large piece of daub (408) N.W. 1.95 x N.E. 9.17. Layer (2) was removed over its western half and over a strip between its edge and the edge of the cutting. A possible edge observed to West but none to East. Accordingly, layer (2)  was removed from east half. Examination of surface at this level suggests that ditch extended into this cutting only for about a metre with a fairly well defined area of earth and small stones. South of this on the same line were large disturbed and tilted stones. Could be bedrock disturbed by adjacent tree, or part of ditch fill. Also patches of burning and possible postholes in this latter area (see plan). Brushing proved of no help in identifying extent of feature. Possible postholes mentioned above that may be in the ditch infill were sectioned before investigation of ditch itself commenced. No postholes have turned up in area south of the small surface stones, which TWC thought marked the full extent of ditch F201. If so, it is a very short segment, and if there is a causeway between ditches F201 and F1712 that causeway would be wider than any of the others so far revealed. During the 1974 season the section at end of excavation was redrawn and photographed. When we began removing fill a distinct division was noticed at average of 20 cms from top on West side, and up to 30 cms from top on East, between loose fill of dark brown earth and stones of great variety of shape, size and angle (though none very large) above, and much tighter fill of less soil (lighter) and larger stones, more horizontal below a triangle of nails marking line of section.(1) 97cm East of NW peg and 5cm South of North edge of cutting.(2) 3m East of NW peg and 25cm South of North edge of cutting. At the end of July 1974 the fill was removed. The excavator noticed that there was far more of (3) (compact yellow-brown silt) on West side where the tighter fill (2) was thicker. There were no more finds. Finds: At top of fill, bronze fibula CH74/830. At base of layer of loose fill in centre of ditch - several pieces of bone, pot x 1, ? daub, very large piece of daub (408). Ditch in B1 showed a rather flat and shallow bottom. Leaf arrowhead found again stuck to the sides of the ditch in the "clay cement”. Finds: Leaf arrowhead. This feature was excavated first in 1971 and again in 1974, separate feature sheets were used.
