| F01712 | H3, J3 | Ditch.
2 patches of burning on ditch surface F01704 confined to layer 1 of H3.
Second patch further South in H3 layer 2 continued across into J3. Ditch
revealed in several excavations sessions. See feature sheet for extensive
notes. The excavators comment was that he thought the ditch had been
deliberately back-filled in one operation. Layers in ditch:- (1), upper c. 10cm of fine very dark earth with roots and small stones. (2), deep layer of stones and dark earth.This cannot be subdivided on the bases of any change in soil colour ,as the dark earth continues down to layer (3) (very narrow) at the bases.The only basis for subdivisions would be stone size, those in the northern part of the section being very much larger and fairly consistently sloping down towards the centre of the ditch. (3), compacted yellowish silt with chipples, very hard, in the faults and crevices of the bedrock, and between it and the lowest stones of the fill. Finds: Layer (1), pebbles and bone. Layer (3), (on east side right against edge) and ? leaf arrow head, |

| F01723 | J3 | Patch of burning. A continuation of shallow burning on surface of ditch fill in cutting H3. Small stones burnt mostly red but some blue-grey covering approx 1m square, but very shallow. | 3 | approx 1m | approx 1m | v shallow | 1 | 1 | 1 | http://www. | http://www. | http://www | http://www | http://www | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F01724 | J3 | Patch of burning shown in J3 feature plan and Plan 2. A patch revealed after cleaning of Layer (1) of concentrated burning about 30cms in dim with an area c 1m in diameter of more scattered burning. Very shallow. | 3 | 30 cms - 1 m | 1 | 1 | 1 | http://www. | http://www. | http://www | http://www | http://www | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F01725 | J3 | Patch of burning uncovered at top of Layer (2). Very concentrated burning red and blue-grey colouring of many stones, some quite large. Hearht or posthole? Sectioned, concentrated burning the first 10 cms, after that proportion of burnt stones decreased and stopped by 20 cps. Depth to 35 cms in an attempt to establish level of feature in relation to bedrock, which however was deeper that 35 cms at this point. Definitely not a posthole and probably not a hearth either. | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | http://www. | http://www. | http://www | http://www | http://www | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F01726 | J3 | Posthole? Fill of mostly medium and small stones with many chipples, especially at the bottom. Two relatively large uprights were located in the middle, protruding above the surface, orientated NE-SW. One rather large packing stone on E side close to surface. When other half removed, quite a number of upright packing stones. Although no very well defined cut edges, this feature does appear roughly circular and probably a small posthole. Oddly situated in small patch of undisturbed bedrock. | 1 | 25 cms diam at top, 21 cms at bottom | 20 cms | 1 | 1 | 1 | http://www. | http://www. | http://www | http://www | http://www | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F01727 | J3 | Not a feature. Large upright stone with disturbance. No cut edges. Fill: Larger stones loosely packed with medium/dark soil between. | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | http://www. | http://www. | http://www | http://www | http://www | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| F01728 | J3 | Patch of burning within Layer (2). Uncovered after trowelling but still well above bedrock. Concentration of burnt stones - posthole or hearth? Section showed it to be neither. Burning continued to 20 cos at the centre which sloped down at the side. Fill: Smaller stones than surrounding, | 3 | 1 | 1 | 1 | http://www. | http://www. | http://www | http://www | http://www |
