F01950 J99 Pit or enlarged posthole. Posthole suspected after removal of layer 1, (patch of burnt stone). Area marked by burnt stone on surface. East edge of posthole? Delineated by bedrock falling in steps towards centre. West edge extremely nebulous, with larger stones and lighter earth continuing beyond edge of section. Eastern portion of ? posthole darker with more chipples. Much burnt stone in fill. Fragments of charcoal and burnt tooth found when digging out other half of this shape.
During removal of 2nd half it became plain that this feature was not a posthole but a pit of some sort. North edge of ? pit continues under baulk but base rising towards it.  Edge of feature still nebulous, consisting of steps of horizontal but loose bedrock, with one area 15cm long showing possible curved edge at 20cm depth.  A promentary of bedrock partly undercut, with burnt stones under it.  Much burnt stone throughout fill.  Some bedrock tumbled into pit lying obliquely against edge.  This appears to be a cut rather than an actual feature, in view of the nature of the fill. Finds: Frags of charcoal and burnt tooth.

F01951 J99 Posthole? Pit? Presence of posthole suspected at top of layer 2. No burning, but a number of tilted stones. Edges very nebulous - perhaps true edge not yet found. A concentration of burnt stones at depth of 30 - 40 cms, and further bone scattered in distribution. On removing second half it became plain that the drawn section does not show the true edges; burnt stone continued beyond them. 27.7.75. edges still not found, though possible arc of base in bedrock at bottom. Burnt stone still continues into "walls" and hole abandoned for moment until after removal of layer 2 in the hope of finding some surface indication of extent. The fault line running nw./sw. through F1951 was revealed more clearly after removal of 2, and to the nw of F1951 appeared as a line of vertical stones. Immediately ne of this was a small area of concentrated burning, which was sectioned and dug as a posthole. Sides were not well defined but excavator was clearly confident that here, as within F1962 was a posthole dug within the fill of a larger feature.
ill contained a fair depth (c 10cms) of darker soil, considerable burnt stones. No finds.
OMMENT The full extent of the whole feature (ie F1951 and F1960),plus, presumably, the area surrounding them, was never determined as time ran out. Burnt stone still continued in the "sides" and if dug out, the thing would probably turn into a large shapeless pit like features F1950 and F1952 - whether manmade or natural it is impossible to say, as the whole area of great disturbance.
Finds: 1 fragment of leaf shaped arrowhead , depth c 10cms

F01957 J99 Posthole. Attention was drawn to this feature during brushing over its general area after removal of layer (2) by concentration of finds, mainly bone and pot. A darker and roughly circular depression sectioned to reveal a well cut straight sided posthole. F01958 J99, J1 Posthole of J99/J1 section. Found after removal of layer (2). Appeared as a half-circle against section, with darker soil and concentration of burnt stones. Although edges pretty broken, the contents fell away satisfactorily and never any doubt about extent of hole. F01963 J99 Small posthole? Found after removal of layer (3). Too small for sectioning. Light soil with small stones. N and W edges really do look cut, but S and E. Floor not very flat. Very few burnt stones inside.
