F02552 N99, N1 A strip of burning with concentrated patches was noted in level (1) of the Southern third of N99 and a smaller area of N1 (see Plan (1) of N99 + N1). Two main concentrations given no's F02553 and F02555. Thought to be an area of natural faulting (see the jumbled stones on Plan (2)). Finds present throughout the feature. F02553 N99 Hearth, An area of concentrated burning, most likely to be the last remnants of a hearth in the South-West corner of N99. Original burning can be seen on Plan (1). Throughout the excavation finds of burnt bone, daub, pottery and flint were very abundant for an area at least a metre around the concentration.  More burnt stones were revealed lower down, noticeably a few upright ones, although they were closely packed and showed no obvious signs of being a hearth boundary. These stones were sectioned but they would seem to represent the bottom of the hearth as no more burnt stones or finds underlay this level.
his level overlay a natural(?) depression which was probably part of F02552 complex. Finds: Burnt bone, pottery and flint.

F02555 N99 Area of scattered red and grey burnt stones within F02552 (see Plan (1), N99), but a plan excavation showed no signs of this being a hearth. The original stone concentration itself is not good enough to suggest a hearth. A number of finds recovered from the general area but not of any great significance. F02557 N99 Posthole, of Iron Age longhouse type, in centre southern edge of N99. Finds from within the rock cut section of the posthole certainly indicate that it is Iron Age in date. From levels 1 and 2 came 5 pieces of a probable Romano-British ware, the lowest of these being found at the junction of level 2 and the bedrock cut, and it would seem likely that the posthole was represented at this stage by a depression into which the sherds fell. Layered:
. small stones and earth
. large stones with a thick hard deposit of burnt leached soil.
oil sample taken.

F02558 N99 Complex of two large and one small, intercut postholes. A large post (a) going off under still-standing tree, cut by a second, deeper large post (b). Cut into the corner of this and marked by packing stones, is a third, but this time small and not very deep. Originally revealed as an area of large, flat, pitched stones, the central one of which was burnt red. A large flat stone at c.40cm depth seemed to indicate the bottom of the post, i.e. the post stood on this, although the cut depth was c.75cm deep.
Both (a) and (b) produced a lot of finds with a large amount of charcoal. In (a) there seemed to be a layer of packed clay against the southern edge although this is probably natural as it continues into a natural fissure and under the bedrock.
ample of clay taken.

F02564 N99 Posthole, two postholes (F02564 + F02565) of similar size and character cut down into F02552 at the junction with bedrock. F02565 would seem, from the nature of the stones in the fill, to have been cut through F02564 as the packing? stones of F02565 overly those of F02564. F02570 N99 Posthole, of type characteristic to Iron Age Longhouse. Associated Iron Age small finds including Pottery. Some large lumps of Blue Lias which are of interest. F02581 N99 Posthole, matches F02557, F02568 and F02579. Showed leaching of layer (2) typical of all four posts.
