F02352 S96, T97 Ditch - numerous layer- for relationships between layers, see feature sheets:
1a: Dark soil and small stone rubble. Very worn and smoothed at surface: much walked upon not simply weathered.  hearths laid directly over this layer. Very little intervening soil
1b: Small stones, some angular and brown soil
1c: Small/medium stones, much leached.
1d: Small stones
1e: Hard packed medium rubble, brown matrix (clay)
2: Medium and large stones in red-brown clayey matrix. Overlain by F02352(1) in the Northern three stretches of ditch.
3a: Small stones with small proportion of soil: present in South stretch of ditch.
3b: Layer of small stones and chipples below it, sealing F02456.
4: Yellow limestone dust concreting large stones.
5: Grey/brown soft leached material against West side of bedrock in natural fissure.
6: Small rubble with dark soil: similar to F02352(1) but less chipple = F02352(1c)
7: Dark grey soil apparently burnt and possibly a primary silt of the ditch.
8a: Dark brown soil at bottom of ditch
8b: Black soil with high charcoal content,  below layer 8.
9: Yellow pale brown limestone dust, some small stones.

F02353 S96, T96 Rubble bank to the West of ditch F02352. Small, thin, sharp, angular stones. Spreads down the slope of U96 and possibly over F02429, although this relationship is unclear.

1: Small, thin, sharp, angular stones.
2: Medium sized (c. 10cm long) rubble = site layer (3). Probably overlies bedrock. Sealed by site layer (2).
3: Worn (weathered?) medium stones, compacted in brown soil. Present all over North West area of S96 and T96

F02440 S96 Intrusive feature in central section of ditch. Sealed by F02352(4). Fill of grey soil with high proportion of burnt stones. Same as F02393. On further excavation, this proved to be the fill of the re-cut of ditch F02352, and it was therefore linear and not the shape indicated by the original triangulations.
